What 20x actually adds
Both Pro tiers have the same feature set — Deep Research, Agent Mode, Codex, GPT-6 Pro in Chat, custom GPTs. OpenAI's own wording is that the tiers share the same core capabilities and differ in usage allowance. So the whole comparison fits in one table:

Note that “20x” is relative to Plus; relative to 5x it is 4×. The Codex figures are OpenAI's per-5-hour estimates, not fixed counts — cloud chats consume more than local messages, and weekly limits may also apply. The Chat figures are the official numbers from the Help Center.
How the pause changed the question
Before 10 September 2026, 20x was a tier you could step into for a heavy month and step out of afterwards. Since then the official rules are: Free, Go, Plus and Pro $100 cannot upgrade to $200; existing $200 subscriptions keep renewing; and once your access ends you can come back only through a one-time return — available for 30 days after access ends, only to people who had Pro $200 on 10 September (or lost it in the 30 days before), and only once. No restart date has been announced.
- If you genuinely need 20x, holding it is now worth more: it is something new customers cannot get from OpenAI. Your one job is to keep it renewing.
- If it is optional, the entry cost is no longer just a monthly fee but a commitment to renew every month. Those people should stay on 5x, which OpenAI still sells.
Four kinds of people who should buy it
- Agent and computer-use users whose main model is Astra. Reporting on the pause tied it to Astra's computer-use workloads consuming compute far faster than chat. On 5x, Astra's 25–225 per 5 hours can break a long multi-step task in the middle; 20x's 100–900 lets it finish.
- People rate-limited three or more times a week on 5x. The simplest test: open the usage panel and count for one week. At three or more, the per-unit price of allowance drops from ¥200 to ¥110 and the interruptions stop.
- People who run Deep Research daily. OpenAI calls Pro $200 the highest usage tier. If long research reports are your routine, this is the tier that doesn't make you wait for a reset.
- People whose default reasoning model is GPT-6 Pro. On 5x the shared 50 messages a week are typically gone by midweek; on 20x you have 200 a week plus a separate 170 Sol Pro a day, and hitting one limit still leaves the other model usable.
Three kinds who should not
- People limited fewer than three times a week. The extra spend buys no extra output, and since the pause you cannot try 20x for a month and step back down without losing it.
- People whose main model is Terra or Luna. On 5x, Luna is 1,250–10,000 per 5 hours — everyday work rarely touches that wall, and switching to a smaller model is OpenAI's own first suggestion when limits bite.
- People who only occasionally want GPT-6 Pro in Chat. 5x already offers it; 50 a week covers occasional use, and Codex's separate Astra allowance is there when Chat runs out.
