First, the thing people get wrong: 20x adds no features
This is the most common way to buy the wrong tier. Pro $100 and Pro $200 have the same feature set: Deep Research, Agent Mode, Codex, custom GPTs, the Pro models, image creation, memory, file uploads. OpenAI says it in one sentence — both Pro tiers include the same core capabilities, and the difference is usage allowance. The extra $100 buys exactly one thing: allowance.
So the question is never “what can 20x do that 5x can't”. It is “how many times a week does an allowance limit stop my work”. The official numbers below let you answer that against your own usage.
In Chat: two separate allowances versus one shared pool
This is the biggest gap between the tiers, and the one OpenAI documents most precisely:

Read the last row twice. On Pro $100, GPT-6 Pro and Sol Pro draw from one weekly allowance and OpenAI states that switching between them gives you no extra messages once it is exhausted. On Pro $200, when you hit the GPT-6 Pro weekly limit, ChatGPT automatically continues with GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium, and you can still pick Sol → Pro manually as long as the Sol Pro daily allowance and the combined daily cap have room.
In everyday terms: 20x averages 28 GPT-6 Pro messages a day plus 170 Sol Pro; 5x has 50 a week for both models together — about 7 a day.
In Codex and ChatGPT Work: a third allowance, entirely separate
Most people don't know this: Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex have separate allowances. When Chat is exhausted, Codex usually keeps working. OpenAI publishes the Codex side as local messages per 5-hour window:

The ranges are wide because consumption depends on task complexity, context length, tool use and caching — OpenAI says prompt length alone is not a reliable estimate, and cloud chats use more than local messages. For anyone running long tasks the row that matters is the first one: Astra 100–900 against 25–225. A task that needs the model to take dozens of steps in a row often hits the wall mid-task on 5x and finishes in one run on 20x.
What 20x is actually for
- Long agent and computer-use runs. Press coverage of the pause attributed it to Astra's computer-use workloads consuming far more compute than question-answering. That is precisely what the 20x allowance exists for — and why OpenAI stopped selling it.
- Deep Research as a daily habit, not an occasional one. OpenAI describes Pro $200 as the highest usage tier. If research reports are your routine, this is the tier that doesn't interrupt them.
- Refactoring whole modules, not single functions. Codex Astra at 100–900 per 5 hours is the difference between “change this file” and “change this subsystem”.
- One account carrying the whole workflow. Chat for scoping, ChatGPT Work for documents, Codex for code — three separate allowances, all sized for full-time use.
When you should not buy 20x
- The 50 GPT-6 Pro messages a week on 5x last until the weekend. Your density of hard problems doesn't justify the extra cost.
- Your main model is Terra or Luna. On 5x, Luna is 1,250–10,000 per 5 hours; everyday tasks rarely hit that wall.
- You only want to try the strongest model now and then. 5x already lets you pick GPT-6 Pro in Chat, and Codex gives you a separate Astra allowance when Chat runs out.

Why this tier is so hard to get right now
Since 10 September 2026 OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200 — from Free, Go, Plus and Pro $100 alike — with no restart date. The pricing page confirms it from the other side: Pro is listed only as “From $100 / month · 5x more usage”, and the words “$200” and “20x” do not appear on the page. The tier has been withdrawn from retail, not merely rate-limited.
The same Help Center article also says: existing Pro $200 subscriptions continue to renew as usual. That sentence is what makes a ready-made account possible. One nuance worth knowing: OpenAI now offers a one-time return to people who had Pro $200 on 10 September (or lost it in the 30 days before), usable once, within 30 days of their access ending, on the same account. It does nothing for anyone who never had 20x.
