ChatGPT plans compared (2026): Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro 5x vs Pro 20x — which to buy, and which you can still buy

The 2026 line-up

If your mental model is still “free ChatGPT and a $20 Plus”, it is out of date. The consumer side now has five price points, and the confusing part is that Pro has two prices. Here they are as OpenAI's pricing page lists them today:

Business (per seat) and Enterprise exist for organisations and are not covered here, except for one point about training data below.

Go: what $8 buys, and what it leaves out

Go is the entry paid tier. According to the pricing page it adds, over Free, more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory — and the page says the plan may include ads. What it does not add matters more:

• No GPT-6 Astra and no GPT-5.6 Sol. Free and Go users get GPT-5.6 Luna; Sol and Astra start at Plus.
• No Projects, scheduled tasks or custom GPTs. Those are listed under Plus.
• Deep Research and Codex stay at the limited level. “Expanded Deep Research” and “expanded Codex usage” are Plus features.

So Go's honest position is “I want more room to chat and don't want to hit the free limits”. The moment your needs include “research this and write me a report” or “go and finish this task”, Go is out and Plus is the floor.

Plus: the right answer for most people

At $20, Plus is the first tier with the full feature set: GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 Sol reasoning, expanded Deep Research, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage and ChatGPT Work — with no ads. Our advice for individuals is to start on Plus rather than buy Go and then agonise over upgrading. The $12 between them is not “more messages”; it is a different product.

The two Pro tiers: same features, different allowance

This is where 2026 buyers most often get it wrong. Many assume $200 unlocks something exclusive. It does not: OpenAI states that both Pro tiers include the same core capabilities and differ in usage allowance. The official numbers:

How to choose: if most of your day is code and Codex, $100 is usually enough. If your work is long agent runs, daily Deep Research or GPT-6 Pro as your default model, $200 is the tier that stops interrupting you. Do not buy the top tier because it sounds more professional — the extra $100 buys allowance and nothing else. The full allowance picture is in What Pro 20x actually gives you.

When to upgrade: one usable rule

Feature tables make everyone want to upgrade. The only rule that works is: count how often a limit interrupts you in a month.

1. 0–1 times a month: stay where you are.
2. 2–4 times a month: optimise first — send routine work to a lighter model, split very long contexts. That usually saves an upgrade.
3. Every week, after optimising: Pro 5x.
4. Pro 5x limits plus the 50 weekly GPT-6 Pro messages gone by midweek: Pro 20x is a real need, not a wish.

The same logic applies to every usage-tiered subscription, including Claude's: you are never buying features, you are buying uninterrupted time.

An easily missed difference: training on your data

OpenAI's Business plan states “no training on your business data by default”. Consumer tiers — Free, Go, Plus, Pro — are governed by the Data Controls setting in your account, which you should check before using a personal account for company code or client material. For sensitive work, that setting matters more than the difference in subscription price.

Which tiers you can actually buy today

Free, Go, Plus and Pro $100 are sold normally on openai.com. Pro $200 is not: since 10 September 2026 OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to it from every other tier, existing subscriptions keep renewing, and the only way back in is a one-time return limited to people who already had the tier on that date. The pricing page no longer shows a $200 option at all.

For international buyers this leaves two practical cases:

• You want Plus or Pro 5x but your card is declined or your country isn't supported: a ready-made account — Plus ¥219 (≈ 31.74 USDT), Pro 5x ¥999 (≈ 144.79 USDT) — emailed within 10–30 minutes. Same budget on the Anthropic side

The Claude tiers, and how to get them without a working card, are in Claude Pro and Max without a credit card. Plenty of professional developers keep both.

Three things to check before you order

1. Prices and allowances move. OpenAI changed both several times in 2026; treat the linked official pages as current, and our pricing page as the price you will actually pay.
2. Account state decides whether a top-up is possible. A Plus top-up needs a Free account; Pro 5x needs Free or Plus; Pro 20x cannot be added to any account while the pause lasts. Ready-made accounts sidestep all of this.
3. One person, one account. Sharing an account across locations is what triggers OpenAI's risk controls, and banned accounts are not refunded. Change the initial password of a ready-made account on arrival.
