What you're seeing
You open openai.com/chatgpt/pricing, or Settings → My Plan, expecting two Pro tiers. There is one. Pro reads “From $100 / month · 5x more usage”, the word “200” appears nowhere on the page, and the upgrade flow ends at $100. People assume it is their account, their region, an app-store quirk or a bug. It is none of those.
Why the option is missing
OpenAI's Help Center article About ChatGPT Pro tiers states it plainly: as of 10 September 2026, new sign-ups and upgrades to the ChatGPT Pro $200 plan (Pro 20X) are temporarily paused, including from Free, Go, Plus and Pro $100. Existing $200 subscriptions are not affected. And in the pause FAQ: “You can upgrade to Pro $100 from the Pricing page or from Settings → My Plan. New subscriptions and upgrades to Pro $200 remain paused, except for eligible customers using the one-time return.” Press coverage attributes the pause to capacity after the GPT-6 Astra launch; no reopening date has been given.

Things people try that don't work
- A new account. It can't sign up for $200 either, and OpenAI doesn't transfer subscriptions between accounts. If you had 20x on the old account, a new one also forfeits your one-time return, which is tied to the same account.
- Changing region, VPN, browser or app store. The pause is account-wide and global; there is no region where the $200 option is on sale.
- Promo codes. New Pro $200 promo redemptions are paused too.
- Buying ChatGPT credits. Credits extend Work and Codex usage on the plan you already have. They don't change your plan, and they don't give you the Chat allowances of Pro $200 (200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week plus 170 Sol Pro a day).
- Downgrading “for a month” to save money. The downgrade works; the upgrade back is what's paused. Only the one-time return can undo it, and only once.
The route that works: a ready-made account
OpenAI blocked two actions — signing up for $200 and upgrading to it — and explicitly kept a third: renewing. An account that already had Pro 20x before 10 September keeps renewing exactly as before. A ready-made account is such an account, handed over to you with the subscription active. It does not depend on the pause ending; it depends on the renewal continuing, which is the one thing OpenAI preserved.

How to know when the button comes back
Three signals must all flip: the pause notice disappears from the Help Center article “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”; the site-wide banner about paused Pro $200 sign-ups disappears from help.openai.com; and openai.com/chatgpt/pricing shows a $200 option again. Until all three change, the official channel is closed. If you're on a ready-made account by then, nothing changes for you — it keeps renewing either way.
