Why you're switching at all
Because your own account can't be upgraded. Since 10 September 2026 OpenAI has paused upgrades to Pro $200 from Free, Go, Plus and Pro $100, while existing $200 subscriptions keep renewing. A ready-made account is one of those existing subscriptions, handed to you. It is necessarily adifferent account — which is why the question “what happens to my stuff?” comes up. If all you want is Plus or Pro 5x, you don't need to switch anything: those are still added to your own account as a top-up (Plus needs a Free account, Pro 5x needs Free or Plus), see Ready-made vs your own account.

The export, exactly as OpenAI describes it
- On the old account: Settings → Data Controls → request the export. Available on Free, Go, Plus and Pro; not while logged out. You may be asked to verify ownership through the account's email or phone.
- Download the ZIP while signed in to the same account that requested it.
- Extract it. The file you want is
conversations.json; large exports may contain numbered conversation files instead. - On the new (ready-made) account: start a new conversation and upload the JSON file. If it's too large, upload the numbered files separately, split it, or upload only what you need.
OpenAI is explicit about the limits: this makes the old conversations available as reference in that conversation. It does not add them to the chat history, create separate chats, restore the sidebar, or move subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs or files. Treat it as “ChatGPT can look things up in my old chats”, not “my old account is back”.
Running two accounts without getting either banned
- One person, two accounts — fine. Keep the old account for its remaining Plus or Pro 5x days, use the new one for 20x. There is no rule against a person holding two accounts.
- One account, two people — not fine. Sharing credentials or signing in from several countries at once is what trips OpenAI's risk controls, and accounts banned for policy violations aren't refunded.
- Don't touch billing on the ready-made account at openai.com. It's managed from your ClaudeMax order page. Change the password on arrival; that's the only account-side action you need.
- Export before the old subscription lapses if you want the data; exports need a signed-in, verified account.
