What's the same on both tiers
According to Anthropic's own comparison table, Max 5x and Max 20x don't differ in features at all:
| Item | Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official monthly price | $20 ($17 on annual billing) | $100 | $200 |
| Per-session allowance vs Pro | 1× | 5× | 20× |
| Claude Code, Research, Projects | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Opus / Sonnet / Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Fable 5 / 5.1 | Usage credits only | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Priority access at busy times, higher output limits | No | Yes | Yes |
| Billing | Monthly or annual | Monthly only | Monthly only |
The one difference: allowance, and how it resets
Anthropic describes Max 5x as five times Pro's per-session allowance, for people who use Claude frequently across varied tasks, and Max 20x as twenty times, for people who work with Claude daily on most of their tasks. The session allowance resets every five hours. Both tiers also have a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account — Settings > Usage shows when. Anthropic doesn't publish the weekly numbers.
The web app, the desktop app and Claude Code share one allowance, so a heavy chat day leaves less for Claude Code in the evening. On 14 September 2026 Anthropic also adjusted the weekly Claude Code allowance (a permanent 25% increase while a temporary 50% bonus ended).
How the 50% Fable cap works
- Same rule on both tiers: Fable 5 / 5.1 can use up to 50% of the weekly allowance at no extra cost, and it uses the allowance faster than other models.
- Different absolute size: 20x has the bigger weekly allowance, so its half is bigger. If Fable 5.1 is your daily driver, this is the most concrete reason to take 20x.
- After the cap: keep using Fable on usage credits, or switch back to Opus 5.5 / Sonnet 5.5 within your plan.
- In Claude Code: Fable 5.1 needs Claude Code 2.1.255 or later; switch with
/model.
Which tier do you need?
Track one week first: how often you hit the five-hour limit and the weekly limit in Settings > Usage, and what /status shows in Claude Code. Then:
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| On Pro, hitting the five-hour limit several times a week, repositories growing | Max 5x (Anthropic's advice: consistently hitting limits and needing capacity for larger repositories) |
| On Max 5x, the weekly allowance runs out before the reset, or you hit the five-hour limit most days | Max 20x (Anthropic's advice: consistently hitting limits on 5x) |
| Heavy Fable 5.1 use, or long parallel sessions and subagents | Max 20x |
| Only one or two overruns a month | Stay on 5x; cover the odd overrun with usage credits, or wait for the reset |
| Mostly chat and writing, little Claude Code | Pro or Max 5x — you don't need 20x |
Anthropic's overflow options: usage credits, pre-purchased usage bundles ($50 for $45, $250 for $200, $1000 for $700; up to $2,000 of discounted bundles a month on Pro / Max), and the occasional limit reset. They need a payment method Anthropic accepts and suit the occasional spike; hitting the limit every week is a reason to upgrade instead.
Prices and cost per unit of allowance
Officially 20x costs twice as much as 5x for four times the per-session allowance, and our prices keep the same shape. Per unit of Pro allowance, at today's prices:
| Product | Price today | ≈ USDT | Units of Pro allowance | Per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro on your account | ¥249 | 37.11 USDT | 1 | ¥249 |
| Claude Max 5x on your account | ¥999 | 148.89 USDT | 5 | ¥200 |
| Claude Max 20x on your account | ¥1,799 | 268.11 USDT | 20 | ¥90 |
| Claude Max 5x ready-made | ¥1,259 | 187.64 USDT | 5 | ¥252 |
| Claude Max 20x ready-made | ¥2,359 | 351.57 USDT | 20 | ¥118 |
The per-unit price only matters if you use the units. If you rarely get through half your weekly allowance, 20x is just a bigger bill.
