What launched, and what is what
Two launches three weeks apart changed what you can make with Claude:
- September 16, 2026: one Claude. Anthropic merged Claude Cowork and chat into a single conversation and launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides; Claude Design now works inside any conversation too. All three launched in beta on paid plans (the pricing page has listed them on Free too since October 14, 2026), and Enterprise admins decide when to switch them on. The new experience reaches Pro and Max first, on web, desktop and mobile, in stages over several weeks; Team and Free follow.
- October 6, 2026: Claude for Google Workspace. A Claude sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, in public beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, plus new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (also beta) that let Claude create and edit Google files from the chat.
They overlap, but they are three different ways to work:
| Claude Docs / Slides / Design | Claude sidebar in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides | Google Docs, Sheets, Slides connectors | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You start in | A Claude conversation | The Google file you have open | A Claude conversation |
| The result lives | In Claude, at one shareable link; export when needed | In the same Google file, edited under your name | In Google files, new or existing |
| Claude can see | Your chat, files, Projects and connected apps | Only the open file and your selection, plus connectors you turn on | The files your Google sharing permissions allow |
| Best for | New documents, decks and visuals | Editing files your team already works in | A new Google file, or work across several files |
Claude Docs: write a document together
Claude Docs makes what Anthropic calls living documents, written with Claude and your team. Ask for a doc in any conversation, start your message with /docs, or pick Output in the message box. Claude asks a few questions, drafts on screen and leaves comments explaining its choices; then you edit the text yourself, ask for the next pass, or mention @Claude in a comment. Share it by link (on Pro and Max anyone with the link and a Claude account can open it; on Team and Enterprise only your organization) or export it to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs. Prompts that work:
- “Turn the plan we just worked through into a product spec I can share with the team.”
- “Draft this week’s status report from my notes and last week’s numbers, and flag anything that slipped.”
- Then, as a follow-up: “Tighten the intro and add a risks section.”
Claude Slides: a deck you can present or download
Ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides from your notes, a report or the work already in the chat. Edit any slide directly, leave Claude a comment on a slide, present without leaving Claude, or export to PowerPoint or PDF. When the report and the deck come out of the same conversation, as in Anthropic’s own example, the slides already match the report; a finished doc turns into a deck the same way.
- “Turn this analysis into a 10-slide deck I can present on Monday.”
- “Write the weekly report the way we always do, flag anything that slipped, and put the highlights in five slides for the leadership meeting.”
- “Turn the doc we just wrote into a short deck for the client call: one slide per section, same numbers as the doc.”
Claude Design: one-pagers, mockups and prototypes
Claude Design makes on-brand visuals and mockups: one-pagers, landing pages, interactive prototypes. Ask in any conversation or choose Output → Design, and Claude builds it on a canvas beside the chat. Ask for broad changes in the chat, leave inline comments on the canvas for targeted ones, or drag, resize and align elements yourself; a design system set up by your organization supplies the colors, fonts and components. Export as a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML. The standalone Claude Design at claude.ai/design keeps working.
- “Make a one-page visual summary of this launch plan.”
- “Mock up the onboarding flow we just discussed.”
- “Show me 2–3 alternative layouts for this page.”
What else came with one Claude
- Hand over and walk away. Longer tasks keep running in the cloud after you close the laptop (tasks that use files or apps on your computer need Claude Desktop open), and you can follow them, or answer Claude’s questions, from the mobile app.
- Schedule it. Ask for the report every Monday and Claude starts on it by itself; scheduled tasks can run in the cloud.
- Decide how much it asks. Manual, the default, asks before each action; Auto keeps going and runs automated safety checks first.
- Computer use (Claude clicking and typing in apps on your screen) is in beta on Pro and Max, only while Claude Desktop is open.
Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
The add-on opens Claude in a sidebar next to your file. It reads the open doc, sheet or deck plus your selection and edits the file in place; Google records every change under your name, so Undo and version history work as usual. The sidebar has the same models and connectors you use in Claude, takes up to 20 reference files per message, and keeps chat history per file in your browser (it does not sync).
| App | What Claude does there | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Google Docs | Fixes a sentence or restyles a heading in place without touching the surrounding formatting; for bigger rewrites it proposes suggestion cards you apply or dismiss | “Rewrite the executive summary so it leads with the recommendation and fits in one paragraph.” · “Turn the notes under Next steps into a table with owner, action, and due date.” |
| Google Sheets | Writes and fixes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, adds tabs; for joins or cleaning it pulls a range into Python and writes the result back | “Walk me through how the total in H42 is calculated and flag anything hardcoded.” · “Column D has dates in three different formats. Normalize them to YYYY-MM-DD.” |
| Google Slides | Builds new slides from the deck’s own layouts and theme, then flags elements that overlap or run off the slide and text that is hard to read | “Slide 7 is a wall of text. Split it into two slides and keep the deck’s styling.” · “Draft a five-slide project update from the bullet points in the speaker notes on slide 1.” |
Two modes. In Ask before edits, the default, every change appears as an approval card; in Accept all edits Claude works through the task without stopping. Either way, adding a link, inserting an image from a web address or removing someone’s access needs your approval each time, and Claude cannot share the file, give anyone access or change its owner.
Working from Claude instead. With the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (beta), paste a Google file link into a Claude chat or ask for a new Google doc, sheet or deck; on supported setups it opens beside the conversation. Access matches your Google sharing permissions, and on Team and Enterprise an owner or primary owner enables the connectors first. On Microsoft 365 instead? Pro also includes Claude for Microsoft 365.
How to install Claude for Google Workspace (6 steps)
- Check your plan and browser: You need Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, a Google account that is allowed to install Google Workspace Marketplace apps, and Chrome, Edge or Safari (Firefox is not supported in the beta).
- Install it from the Marketplace: Open the Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace, click Install, choose the Google account you use for Docs, Sheets and Slides, and click Continue. One install covers all three apps.
- Allow the two permissions: Google asks to let Claude show its sidebar and to view and manage the files Claude is opened in. Review both and click Allow.
- Reload and open Claude: Reload any file you already had open, then choose Extensions → Claude → Open Claude. Pressing Alt+/ (Option+/ on a Mac) and typing Claude finds the menu item quickly.
- Sign in: Sign in with your Claude account in the sidebar and, if you want, turn on your connectors.
- Pick a mode and ask: Start in Ask before edits, then ask about the file, for example “Summarize this document in five bullets” or “What does column F calculate?”
If Install is greyed out or Google says “This application is not allowed by your administrator”, your organization blocks Marketplace apps. The message comes from Google, and no Claude plan changes it: only a Google Workspace admin can allowlist Claude or install it for you (an admin install works even while user installs are blocked).
- No Claude in the Extensions menu: reload the file and check you are signed in to Google with the account you installed it for.
- A task stops partway: Google caps one operation at six minutes; ask Claude to continue, or work one tab or ten slides at a time.
- Nothing happens after you send: switch from Firefox, or a browser with strict tracking protection, to Chrome, Edge or Safari and reload.
Which plan includes what
| Plan (Anthropic’s price) | Docs, Slides, Design | Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides | Computer use | New one-Claude app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free ($0) | Yes, listed since October 14, 2026; smallest usage | No (listed for paid plans only) | No | Later; check your account |
| Pro ($20 a month, $17 billed annually) | Beta, on by default | Beta | Beta | First, in stages |
| Max 5x / 20x ($100 / $200 a month) | Beta, on by default | Beta | Beta | First, in stages |
| Team ($20 per standard seat a month billed annually, $25 monthly) | Beta, on by default; an owner can turn it off | Beta; your Google admin may need to allow it, and an owner enables the Google connectors | Not listed | Later |
| Enterprise ($20 per seat a month billed annually, plus usage at API rates) | Beta, off until an owner turns it on | Beta; Compliance API, customer-managed keys and audit export apply | Not listed | Admins get at least 30 days’ notice |
“Not listed”: the Help Center names only Pro and Max for computer use. Free can use Docs, Slides and Design but has the smallest usage (Pro gives at least 5x per session) and no Claude Code. For everything else here Pro and Max are the same; Max buys more usage (about 5x or 20x Pro’s per session), higher output limits and priority access at busy times.
Honest limits, and what to do if you do not see it yet
- Staged rollout. Accounts on the same plan get the new experience at different times. Still seeing separate “Chat” and “Cowork” options in the message box? You do not have it yet; there is nothing to switch on, and once your account moves over you cannot switch back.
- One setting. Docs, Slides and Design need Cloud code execution and file creation turned on in Settings → Capabilities.
- Beta gaps in Claude. No version history yet in Docs and Design, and deleting a doc is permanent. The iOS and Android apps can request and view docs and designs, but editing and sharing settings need web or desktop. Team and Enterprise docs cannot be shared outside the organization.
- Beta gaps in Google. The sidebar works only on the open file (no other Drive files, no PDF export) and must stay open while Claude works. It cannot read Docs comments, and charts it adds to Slides are images that do not update.
- Usage. Everything counts toward your plan’s limits, long tasks more than quick questions; see Settings → Usage. A promotion that ran from October 1 to 15, 2026 (it ended on October 15) made the 10 messages after Claude created or edited a doc, deck or design use 50% less of the five-hour limit on Pro, Max and Team (the weekly limit was unchanged).
Pro or Max: who should buy what
- Pro, on your own account ¥249 or ready-made ¥329: a few docs and decks a week, the Google sidebar for edits, Claude Code on the side. Every feature in this article is included.
- Max 5x, on your own account ¥999 or ready-made ¥1,259: you build reports and decks from several sources most days, leave long tasks running, or iterate a lot in Claude Design, where complex projects use more of the limit.
- Max 20x, on your own account ¥1,799 or ready-made ¥2,359: Claude works for you all day, with parallel and scheduled tasks plus heavy Claude Code.
- Team or Enterprise: when documents must stay inside your organization under admin control. These are Anthropic’s organization plans; we do not sell them.
- Free: since October 14, 2026 you can try Docs, Slides and Design, but the usage is the smallest, so a long doc or a deck with a few rounds of edits can hit the limit, and there is no Claude Code or Google sidebar. If you end up making them every week, that is when Pro pays off.
Torn between the Max tiers? Claude Max 5x or 20x works it out by how often you hit the limit.
