Choose work you actually get paid to finish

Pick a small bug fix, a test-writing task and a bounded refactor from your normal work. Avoid selecting only demonstrations that are unusually easy for the tool. Define acceptance criteria first: expected behavior, required checks and the person who decides whether the result is usable.

Estimate a manual baseline from comparable completed work. Mark it as an estimate if you cannot measure it directly. Repeating the same task with AI after solving it manually introduces a learning advantage; prefer similar tasks and record differences in difficulty.

Do not confuse saved time with extra revenue

A freelancer on a fixed-price project may use saved time for another accepted task. An hourly contractor may simply bill fewer hours. Choose a value for the recovered time that reflects your contract and workload; your advertised hourly rate is not automatically the right number.

Include subscription cost, any separate API or paid usage, applicable fees and time spent maintaining the setup. Keep the estimate in one currency. Use the order quote for the amount you will actually pay, rather than mixing an official list price with a reseller's delivered product price.

What would justify buying or upgrading?

Buy or keep an entry option when several representative tasks show positive net value and the account meets your work requirements. Compare a higher allowance when quota interruptions stop already-valuable work and the expected recovered value exceeds the additional cost. If review overhead erases the benefit, change the task or workflow before increasing the spend.

For an upgrade, use the difference between plans, not the full value of all AI-assisted work. If the higher plan costs an additional 80 units of your currency, the relevant question is whether it can recover more than 80 units of additional productive value.

Turn the result into a concrete order
